Oceanographic Monitoring and Marine Current Analysis

The oceanographic monitoring project in Rosignano Solvay, carried out on behalf of CNR ISMAR, aimed to analyze the main marine currents dominating the Tuscan coastal stretch.
GeoScape implemented a structured program of oceanographic campaigns and current monitoring, aimed at understanding coastal hydrodynamic dynamics and the processes influencing the environmental balance of the area.
Oceanographic Campaigns and Annual Monitoring
The activity was structured as follows:
- 4 oceanographic campaigns
- Each lasting 4 days
- Monitoring carried out over 12 months
This approach enabled the collection of seasonal data and the assessment of variations in marine currents over time, providing a comprehensive understanding of the coastal dynamics of Rosignano.
Advanced Oceanographic Instrumentation
To ensure precision and reliability of the data, specialized instruments were used to measure currents and marine parameters:
- Valeport 106 single-point current meter (self-recording / direct reading)
- ADCP Sentinel Teledyne RD Instruments – 300 kHz, Doppler acoustic current profiler
- Multiparameter probe for environmental monitoring
The use of the 300 kHz ADCP made it possible to analyze the vertical profile of marine currents, providing detailed information on flow velocity and direction throughout the water column.
Analysis of Coastal Dynamics
The current analysis made it possible to:
- Identify dominant currents along the coastal stretch
- Analyze seasonal variability of marine flows
- Support environmental studies and hydrodynamic modeling
- Provide scientific data to support coastal planning
The project represents an example of oceanographic monitoring applied to the management and understanding of coastal dynamics, based on a rigorous methodological approach and high-precision instrumentation.
