Coastal protection and artificial reef for hydrogeological risk mitigation

The new coastal protection project in Sturla – Genoa represents an innovative coastal engineering intervention developed by GeoScape, in collaboration with Studio Ferri-Gazzano, DICCA – University of Genoa, and the GOA Consortium.
The main objective of the project is to reduce hydrogeological risk and protect the shoreline, through an integrated approach that combines coastal defense, structural beach nourishment, and the enhancement of wave sports.
Phase One: Shoreline Stabilization and Beach Nourishment
The first phase of the project involves stabilizing the shoreline through:
- The installation of a groyne to the east of Sportiva Sturla
- Beach nourishment with 10,000 m³ of material
This intervention allows for the morphological rebalancing of the beach, improving its resistance to marine erosion and contributing to the mitigation of hydrogeological risk.
Phase Two: Artificial Reef and Beach Protection
The second phase introduces a highly innovative element for the Ligurian context: the construction of an artificial reef to the east of the Sturla stream, accompanied by an additional 6,000 m³ of beach nourishment.
The reef performs a dual strategic function:
- Active coastal protection, dissipating wave energy and preserving the beach
- Generation of surfable waves, creating ideal conditions for water sports along the structure
A Model of Sustainable Coastal Engineering
The Sturla project represents an advanced model of sustainable coastal protection, where territorial safety is integrated with environmental and recreational enhancement.
Through a multidisciplinary approach and innovative technical solutions, GeoScape contributes to the development of resilient infrastructure capable of addressing coastal erosion and climate change challenges.
